Cake and Cats: a visit to Edinburgh’s cat cafe

Having grown up with beautiful cats at home, I’m a massive cat-lover and since the opening of Edinburgh’s cat cafe I’ve been desperate to go. So when my mother, who loves cats even more than I do, came up to visit, I decided that the perfect mothers day treat would be sitting amongst a swarm of beautiful kitties and eating cake in Stockbridge’s Maison de Moggy, (as much a treat for myself as for her I’ll admit). The cats were absolutely gorgeous. The cake was average.

It was all a very bizarre experience. We walked in and took off our shoes, got told what to do and what not to do around the cats and then we were unleashed onto their playground. I kind of felt bad for them with their little faces staring at us contemptuously from the other side of the fence. It was almost as though you could hear them thinking ‘Oh great, here come the humans again..’. It would have been different if it were a dog cafe. That would be a disaster in itself of course, with cups and saucers flying everywhere, but at least the dogs would be sat tongues out, wagging their tales on the other side of the fence, overcome with the excitement of your arrival. Cats have that sort of in-built indifference and sense of disdain for anyone that they don’t have any use for.. but I suppose that’s why we all love them so much.

Most of them didn’t want to play with humans, they just wanted to sleep or viciously attack their toys in peace. That being said, it was wonderfully therapeutic being in that environment, and as someone who misses living with a cat I had a lovely time watching them run around. Kind of like when I chase library cat for a soothing stroke when I’m deep amidst essay stress-

except these cats couldn’t get very far aw11096924_10153701757509838_166267115_nay.  One thing is absolutely certain, the day left me with a big gaping hole in my life that only a cat of my very own can fill. It was unbelievably difficult not to grab the cheeky white persian that was trying to eat everyones cake and stuff him in my bag and make a run for it. Definitely worth a visit to Maison de Moggy, even if just to see so many beautiful breeds of cat in one place!
