Trying out a Fit Girl’s morning rituals

Fit Girls Diary blogger, Monica May, recently shared her list of the top fifteen morning rituals that changed her life and made her into the fit girl she is.

I am constantly falling on and off the fitness wagon so I thought I would take her advice and give some of her rituals a go. Here are just a few of her routines that I tried to put into practice…

A glass of hot water to start the day   ✔️

So I started doing this a few days ago as per Monica’s suggestion and now every morning when I first wake up I desperately crave a pint of hot water to get my day kick started. I also squeeze in half a lemon to give the water a little bit of flavour and a little Vitamin C boost. YUM.

Yoga in bed  ✔️

This was the ritual I was most looking forward to trying out and the reason that I decided to give Monica’s list a go! I always make plans to do yoga first thing in the morning and it never happens because I wake up with bleary blind kitten eyes and end up just clinging desperately to those few extra moments in bed.

I tried Monica’s Yoga routine in bed and I’d only got half way through it before I’d jumped out of bed and decided to do a 20 minute YouTube session. I would definitely recommend this as a way to give yourself a big boost of energy in the morning. I was buzzing for the rest of the day!

Avoid screens for 1 hour   ✖️

As much as I would like to say I was able to do this, it just didn’t happen. Mostly because I jumped straight out of bed and went onto YouTube but also because my hand is surgically attached to my phone. I will be doing a Digital blackout in a few weeks time  though to make up for it because it is so important not to be as totally dependent on technology as I know that I am.

Deep Breathing   ✔️

Taking a few deep breaths in the morning and taking a moment to do nothing at all really put my mind in a good place and chilled me out nicely (I did almost fall back to sleep though, be wary).

Start your day with Cacao Seeds   ✖️

Bitter. So so bitter. I’ve tried them before and no matter how healthy they are I just couldn’t bring myself to buy a whole pack to try and squeeze into my morning routine. Plus they’re not cheap! And with the amount of money I spend on Chia Seeds, I just don’t know if my budget can take the weight of any more superfoods.

They are really good for you though, so if you can stand the taste and have the pennies – I say go for it.

20-30 minute cardio   ✔️

I didn’t have time to do this in the morning but managed to squeeze in a twenty minute run later on in the day… I’m going to assume that still counts.

Go nuts for breakfast   ✔️

Adding nuts and seeds to your breakfast is a very good idea apparently. This is fantastic news because the breakfast that I am addicted to and eat every single day is packed with seeds. I followed it up with a handful of almonds for good measure. Job done!

Coffee  ✔️

Yes, yes, yes! Done, done, done! Nothing better than coffee with coconut milk first thing in the morning.

It boosts your metabolic rate and improves your energy levels… it also stains your teeth but never mind that just now (I might invest in one of those curly plastic straws).

Use your non dominant hand to eat breakfast    ✔️

This was so surprisingly tough and my favourite ritual out of them all! I really had to concentrate on what I was doing. Challenging your brain during breakfast has got to set you up right for the rest of the day. It also meant that I didn’t mindlessly gobble up my food and I stopped when I was full!

All in all I would say that I will be definitely be sticking to some of Fit Girl’s Diary morning routines. I now can’t go without my hot water in the morning and yoga in bed is genius idea. To see the rest of Monica’s brilliant rituals click here.

Using your non-dominant hand to eat breakfast is such an interesting concept. I feel like depending on what I was eating I may end up spilling my food everywhere if I did that! I love that it would really test my brain though.

This was such a fun post! Letting you try the healthy ways of life before I do, haha! I try to have a few healthy morning routines during weekends where I’ll make a big breakfast and workout before starting my day, I just can’t seem to bring myself to do this during the weekdays – it seems like however early I get up I still end up in a rush! Would really like to try starting with yoga though, and to take a minute to breath in the morning seems like a good idea! Thank you for the inspiration! xxx

Love your post, this was fun to read and I love the photo too!! It only takes a few simple steps to relax, you just need to make the time for yourself, not rush and breathe….. 🙂
